Design Philosophy

This learning program aims at facilitating learning the stroke order of Chinese characters in standard script. When the program was first established, it consisted of stroke-order animations of 4,808 frequently-used characters decided by the MOE as well as those of 37 Bopomofo symbols. In 2020, based upon the collection of characters in “Concise Mandarin Chinese Dictionary”, this program was expanded to include animations of 6,057 characters. In 2024, based upon the collection of characters in “Mandarin Chinese Mini Dictionary”, this program was expanded to include animations of 6,063 characters.

In addition, the section Advanced Information includes information about pronunciation and meanings of characters from other MOE publications, such as “Concise Mandarin Chinese Dictionary”, “Handbook of Chinese Radicals and Teacher’s Handbook of Standard Form of Chinese Characters”. Hence, this learning site is not only an online stroke-order learning program but also a valuable resource for teaching the Chinese language.

The resolution of the animation display is set at 1024 x 768. The soft- colored background gives an impression of hand-painted drawing paper with a high-quality texture, while the subtle shades of the colors used help reduce eye fatigue from viewing the screen.

The homepage clearly reflects the core idea of this site. It is designed with a lively and happy-looking little girl blowing a very special horn to make a sound of “丶、一、丨、丿、乚(dot, horizontal line, vertical line, left-to-right diagonal, vertical line with a right turn and hook) ” and leading the user onward to stroke-order learning.

The design of the subsequent web pages also is meant to bring out this learning program’s major goal. On the right side of each page is a familiar design of part of a character practice sheet, bearing the six characters “上大人孔乙己” that beginners are usually required to practice.
