Explanation of Search Methods


◎Search for the Stroke Order of Chinese Characters

Users may search the stroke order of a character by keying in charcters, a radical, a stroke number, Bopomofo symbols, or Pinyin spelling.

Ⅰ. Search by Character

Step 1
Click “Character” from the tool bar on any of the web pages other than the home page.

Step 2
In the input box, key in the characers to be looked up.

Step 3
Click “Search”.

If one or some of the characters you have entered is/are not in the database, an error sign as shown below will appear.

Step 4
Select the desired character from those in red grid cells to start practicing its stroke order.

Ⅱ. Search by Bopomofo

Step 1
Click “Search by Bopomofo” from the tool bar on the home page or any of the subsequent web pages.

Step 2
Click the symbols on the screen keyboard to spell the desired character. For example, key in “”,“”,“ˋ” in sequence to search the character “”.

Step 3
Click “Search”.

Step 4
Click the character to start stroke-order learning.

Ⅲ. Search by Stroke Number

Step 1
Select “Search by Stroke Number” from the tool bar on the home page or any of the subsequent web pages.

Step 2
Select the number of strokes of the character to be looked up. For example, select “3” as the number of stroke count to search the character “”.

Step 3
Click “Search”.

Step 4
A group of frequently-used characters which have a stroke count of three will show up on the screen. Select the desired character to start stroke-order learning.

Ⅳ. Search by Radical

Step 1
Click “Search by Radical” from the tool bar on the home page or any of the subsequent web pages.

Step 2
Select the radical of the character to be looked up. Take “” for example.

Step 3
A group of frequently-used characters based on the selected radical will appear on the screen. Click the desired character to start stroke-order learning.

Ⅴ. Search by Pinyin

Step 1
Click “Search by Pinyin” from the tool bar on the home page or any of the other web pages.

Step 2
Key in the spelling and the tone number of the character to be looked up. This field is not case-sensitive. Or, use the screen keyboard to input the spelling and tone mark of the character to be searched. For example, to search the character “”, key in “S”, “H”, “I”, and the diacritic tone mark “ˋ” or tone number “4” in sequence.

Step 3
Click “Search”.

Step 4
Select the desired character to learn the stroke order.

◎Search the Stroke Order of Bopomofo Symbols

Step 1
Click “With Stroke Order of Bopomofo Symbols” on the home page or “Stroke Order of Bopomofo Symbols” from the tool bar on any of the subsequent web pages.

Step 2
A group of 37 Bopomofo symbols will appear. Click the symbol to be looked up. For example, click “”.

Step 3
An animation of the symbol “” will appear. To hear the pronunciation of the symbol, turn on the speakers of your computer.

Step 4
Click “Back” to go back to Step 2 to choose any other symbol.

Note:
According to Handbook of Bopomofo Symbols published by the Ministry of Education, the symbols “” and “” both can be written with either three strokes or four strokes. This learning program adopts the four-stroke variant as the default. To learn the three-stroke variant of each, simply click the link (shown below) beneath the “Pronunciation” icon next to the animated display of “” or “”.
